Jhene was born into music. Her had a studio built into a garage due to his own dreams of becoming a singer. By the time she was born her sisters were in a singing group, she watched them pursue their goal of becoming famous. It was only natural that she followed in their footsteps . Before she could even write, she’d sit down with her mom and create raps and songs. Eventually, writing became the main outlet of her self expression. She grew up listening to artists such as Brandy, Mariah Carey and albums like “The Chronic” by Dr. Dre. It was after a second grade talent show that she discovered she wanted to sing professionally. A performance by her and a few friends singing 702’s “Steelo” was the talk of the night as she received multiple compliments from peers and Staff. With that being said, we can see that almost everyone in 90’s R&B is part of her inspirational music upbringing. A few years later she was signed to Sony Epic and T.U.G at the age of 13. Right before she signed, she asked her mom to be home schooled so she could focus on her career. While there, she hung around her “big bros” B2K and released her first single “No L.O.V.E”, which reached #5 on the US Billboards R&B Charts. Around 16, she asked to be released so she could focus on her education. She says she doesn’t regret it because she got to live a normal life as a teen. A few more years later she has had a child by O’ryan Grandberry , has already don’t to covers so songs such as “Invented Sex” by Trey Songz and Drake’s “Marvins Room” and released a mixtape in 2011 called “Sailing Souls”. Which did her some great justice because after an almost 10 year journey she is now signed to a legit label, Def Jam, through No I.D’s (Ernest Wilson)label. Her latest duties are working on a new EP called “Souled Out” and balancing being a mom and a singer at the same time, she says little Namiko love is great in the studio, she feels like she’s built for the music lifestyle, she loves to sing. She knows it’s not easy but doesn’t complain because this is the life she chose to live.
